IV Ketamine Therapy

IV ketamine is an emerging treatment option for individuals with depression who have not experienced adequate relief from traditional treatments. Unlike conventional antidepressants, ketamine works primarily through the brain’s glutamate system and may affect pathways involved in mood regulation and neuroplasticity.

At Athelas Psychiatry & Wellness, IV ketamine therapy will be offered to carefully selected patients following a comprehensive psychiatric and medical evaluation. Treatment is administered by intravenous infusion in a private, comfortable treatment room with appropriate clinical monitoring throughout the visit.

Ketamine is FDA-approved as an anesthetic; its use by IV infusion for depression and other psychiatric conditions is off-label. Research has demonstrated antidepressant effects in some patients, including people with treatment-resistant depression, but response varies and ketamine is not appropriate for everyone.

What to Expect

Before beginning treatment, we’ll review your symptoms, treatment history, medications, medical history, and potential risks and benefits. If IV ketamine is appropriate for you, we’ll develop an individualized treatment plan.

During treatment, you’ll relax in a private treatment room while ketamine is administered slowly through an IV. You’ll be monitored during treatment and recovery, and you’ll need to arrange transportation home afterward.
